About Dr. Bret Ostrager

Bret Ostrager, DO, is a New York State licensed physician and a member of the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) with a career spanning over three decades in family medicine and medical consulting. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Bellmore, New York, Dr. Ostrager demonstrated an early commitment to education and excellence. He was a standout high school athlete at John F. Kennedy High School on the baseball and wrestling teams, graduating in 1982. His passion for science and healthcare led him to pursue an undergraduate degree in the biological sciences at Stony Brook University in New York, where he laid the foundation for his future in medicine.

Dr. Ostrager continued his academic journey at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences – College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Osteopathy degree in May 1990. Osteopathic medicine emphasizes a holistic approach to patient care, focusing on the interconnection between body systems, which has greatly influenced Dr. Ostrager’s practice philosophy.

Dr. Ostrager completed an internship at Union Memorial Hospital, an affiliate of the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey

After completing his medical education, Dr. Ostrager completed an internship at Union Memorial Hospital, an affiliate of the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Ostrager then did his residency in family medicine at South Nassau Communities Hospital from June 1991 to June 1994. He obtained his license to practice medicine in New York State in June 1992 (license #189123) and was designated Chief Resident in 1994. His dedication to providing quality care was further solidified when he achieved board certification in Family Medicine through the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) in 1994, and he remains certified to this day. This certification attests to his expertise in comprehensive primary care for patients of all ages.

After his residency, Bret Ostrager founded his own medical practice, South Shore Family Medicine PC in Baldwin, where he served as CEO of the corporation which served over 4,500 patients. Dr. Ostrager also served as the school physician for the Freeport and Baldwin school districts from 1994 to 2000.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ostrager has gained extensive experience in clinical practice. He has had hospital privileges at both Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre, as well as at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, New York, where he provided compassionate and effective care to his community and also served as the preceptor for the Stonybrook University medical students who served their rotations there. His extensive work at his medical practice and service at the South Nassau Hospital enabled him to refine his diagnostic skills and propelled him to a career as a medical legal consultant.

Currently, Dr. Ostrager serves as a consultant physician in medical malpractice cases. As a medical-legal consultant, Dr. Ostrager leverages his medical expertise to assist in medical malpractice cases. His role involves evaluating medical evidence, preparing expert opinions, and aiding attorneys in case negotiations, ensuring that justice is served for those who have suffered injuries.

Dr. Ostrager enjoys exercising, running 6 ½ marathons, golfing (with an 8.8 index), cooking, music, and watching sports. He enjoys spending time with friends and his family – his children are the joy of his life, as he is devoted to his son and two daughters.
